What is the difference between a forest that has been “managed” and one that has been left alone? Forest owners are frequently told that their forests must be managed to be healthy -– but what exactly is a healthy forest? How can we measure the health of a forest? One way is to measure the board feet of timber that can be cut from it, and another way is to measure the diversity and abundance of organisms that live in it. In this presentation I will share the evidence, contained in my new book
Nature’s Temples, which shows that the unmanaged forests are the ecologically most healthy. I will also describe the latest activities of the Old-Growth Forest Network, an organization created to ensure that there will always be protected, open-to-the-public, forests across the US.
