Experiencing wild nature needn’t be limited to the remotest regions of the world. It can occur in even the smallest backyard garden. Learn how noted landscape designer Larry Weaner interacts with and responds to ecological processes to create an ever-evolving wild yet still ornamental garden in his small property outside Philadelphia. The Healthiest Forest: What Science Says about Old-Growth
What is the difference between a forest that has been “managed” and one that has been left alone? Forest owners are frequently told that their forests must be managed to be healthy -– but what exactly is a healthy forest? How can we measure the health of a forest? One way is to measure the board feet of timber that can be cut from it, and another way is to measure the diversity and abundance of organisms that live in it. In this presentation I will share the evidence, contained in my new book Nature’s Temples, which shows that the unmanaged forests are the ecologically most healthy. I will also describe the latest activities of the Old-Growth Forest Network, an organization created to ensure that there will always be protected, open-to-the-public, forests across the US.

Integrated Forestland Management
The health of many public forests in Maryland is threatened.  Challenging the norm of “benign neglect,” Don uses Baltimore County’s 1000-acre Oregon Ridge Park as a case study for proactive management for forest ecosystem health and sustainability.  This case study covers a decade of work beginning with a quantitative forest health assessment and management plan developed to guide restorative management.  Don describes how forest science and practices are applied to manage the Oregon Ridge forest to protect water quality, provide for native habitat, and enhance recreational experiences for citizens in the face of oak decline, pests such as Gypsy moth, invasive plants, and deer herbivory.  The Oregon Ridge Park project is Maryland’s only example of a large public park being managed for forest health.

Maximizing Therapeutic Value of Medicinal Herbs
Medicinal herbs get their therapeutic properties through plant phytochemicals, and the quality of an herb is dependent on the concentration of specific phytochemicals present in its plant matter.  Plant chemistry is highly influenced by growing conditions – climate, soil quality, light, water, etc; therefore, providing optimal conditions to maximize active phytochemical constituents results in herbs with stronger medicinal properties.  This talk will provide guidelines for growing, harvesting, and storing quality herbs for maximum therapeutic value.  Examples of specific, easy-to-grow backyard herbs and their active constituents will also be discussed.
